Have Some Spare Time?

Stephanie Styons

I was watching an old episode of The Secret Millionaire over the weekend. In each episode of this reality series, a multi-millionaire lives in a poverty-stricken community for a week pretending to be working on a documentary. At the end of the week, the true identity of the millionaire is revealed as he/she gives a total of $100,000 of his/her own monies to one or more of the worthy individuals the millionaire has met during that week.

There are hundreds of non-profit organizations all over the Raleigh area. You don’t need to go “undercover” to find them. And though most of us don’t have tens of thousands of dollars to give to worthy causes, we can give our time.

There are hundreds of organizations out there that could benefit from the time and effort of volunteers. For me, I choose to use my professional knowledge and experience to help organizations with their marketing and communications needs. Though I enjoy helping my clients achieve their goals and objectives, I find it truly rewarding to help some local non-profits with promoting their admirable efforts.

If you are not volunteering already, give it a try. I’d highly recommend it.

http://www.dw-world.de/image/0,,713081_1,00.jpgBlack Friday is SO 3 days ago.

Today is predicted to put Black Friday sales numbers to shame (Personally I joined the party and got 25% off a pair of awesome boots from DSW just this morning!).  Cyber Monday is taking the online retail world by storm today and social media seems to be the driving force behind it.

Countless blogs and sites have promoted the deals and bargains offered today, but Twitter seems to take the cake as far as Cyber Monday buzz. A search for “cyber monday” on Twitter produces an overwhelming amount of posts – 200 new posts just in the past 5 minutes!

Overwhelmed? Here are a few articles and links to help you weed out the best deals:

Hob Knobbing with a White House Guest!

Nov242009
Elizabeth Romero

Everyone loves to have the opportunity to hob knob!  Well yesterday, several members from Howard, Merrell & Partners’ Public Relations team got to mingle with this week’s Super Star – his name is “Courage” and he will be pardoned by President Obama on the White House lawn this week.  This year’s National Thanksgiving Turkey was raised by one of our very own client’s Butterball, LLC in partnership with Goldsboro Milling Company, Inc.

The event, held on the Worley Family Farm, was much fun!  Guests included NC Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler and other elected officials and VIPs from Butterball, LLC, Maxwell Farms, LLC/Goldsboro Milling Company and Smithfield Foods, Inc.  The Worley family, which raised the bird, were also present and were recognized for their vital role in raising the bird.

All local TV affiliates attended as well as several print and radio, and the team is now busy at work collecting information on the media coverage resulting from the event.

Which dish are you most thankful for?

ThanksgivingFeast-1-2Let’s be honest, who is NOT thinking about food this week?

As we are giving thanks for many things in our lives we are certainly also giving thanks for the smorgasbord* of food that will adorn the table in two short days time.

*Quick history lesson: Smorgasbord comes from the Swedish words smorgas (open sandwich) and bord (table).

According to Merriam-Webster:

1 : a luncheon or supper buffet offering a variety of foods and dishes (as hors d’oeuvres, hot and cold meats, smoked and pickled fish, cheeses, salads, and relishes)
2 : an often large heterogeneous mixture

What is your favorite dish in the traditional Thanksgiving smorgasbord?

AAF Principal Summit: Keeping Up in a Down Economy

Nov202009
Sarah Findle

aaf-rduOn Wednesday the AAF-RDU chapter hosted a Principal Summit panel at McKinney in Durham. The panel, which drew a crowd of over one hundred industry peers, was comprised of five top agency professionals, including Howard, Merrell & Partners’ own COO, Donna Mercer.

Other panelists included: Joni Madison, COO, McKinney; Kathy Pepper, Senior Partner/Managing Director, Ogilvy; Karen Albritton, President, Capstrat; and Craig Jackson, President & CEO, Craig Jackson & Partners.

Moderator, News & Observer Business Reporter, David Ranii led a discussion focused on the state of the advertising industry in the current economy.

Key points included:

  1. In Chinese the word for crisis and the word for opportunity are the same – see each obstacle as a new challenge.
  2. Diversity in client base and agency services is important to keep your head above water in a down economy.
  3. Flat is the new growth.
  4. Clients are still cautious, prepare to be asked to do more with last year’s budget.
  5. Advertising has come full circle, back to the days of small groups of people sitting around talking, peer to peer recommendations. Advertisers can no longer shout over everyone, they need to join the conversation to gain true influence.

Full video of the discussion coming soon!

Which pocket camcorder?

Nov182009
Maximillian Hill

flip-ultra-hd-camcorderGizmodo has done a VERY in-depth review on all the pocket camcorders out there and has named a winner. If you’re looking for a nice camcorder that shoots 2 hours of HD, both Gizmodo and I recommend the Flip Ultra HD.

For a mere $200 you can pick up this snazzy camcorder and toss it in your pocket or purse and be ready to film anytime, anywhere. Maybe you’ll be the next Zapruder as you catch something shocking and amazing on your pocket camera.

A very special haircut

During my time away from the agency, I volunteer with the Durham County, Special Olympics.  Before this past season began, I made a deal with my soccer team.  If they could go the entire season without arguing (too much) AND win a gold medal at the North Carolina Special Olympic State Games – they could shave my head.

You see, last year my team was set-up to win the gold, but their in-fighting cost them dearly. My strategy was to use this incentive when they began to argue. A quick reference to my long flowing locks would usually hush them up.

The state games were held November 7th & 8th. They did very well. Let’s just say, I now know the exact shape of my head. Every nook and every cranny!

Bravo to the Durham County Bulldogs. Champions of Division 3.  They are a VERY Special Group of athletes. And their barber skills aren’t too shabby either.

Joshua Craig

As many of you know, I am one of the photographers for the Carolina Rollergirls roller derby team.

Back in November, Raleigh hosted the Wicked Wheels of the East regional tournament and now some of my photographs from that event have found a home on the website of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Philadelphia was the winner of the Eastern Regionals in quite the upset.

What’s your message?

Billy Barnes

You have to think through your communication carefully or else it could send a different message than the one you intended.  This one, for example, makes me want to run out and buy a bottle of JD just as fast as I can.
