Your Old Long-Sleeve Shirt Could Help Protect NC Tobacco Workers against Green Tobacco Sickness

Long Sleeve ShirtsDuring the month of April, BB&T branches in Cary, NC, and Panoltia, Inc. are collecting long-sleeve shirts to help protect North Carolina tobacco workers against Green Tobacco Sickness.

Green Tobacco Sickness is the result of acute nicotine poisoning. Workers’ clothes become saturated with tobacco juices, which are then absorbed through the skin. Those workers who gather the tobacco leaves under their arms as they harvest them face the most acute risk of illness.

Each of the Cary BB&T branches has a box for the public to drop off shirts. If you have a large volume to donate, you can contact Panoltia at 919-467-3590 to make arrangements for pick up.

It’s Tuesday the 13th? Yikes!

Churchy LaFemme_Color_1Churchy LaFemme, the mud turtle who was one of the principal characters in cartoonist Walt Kelly’s satirical comic strip Pogo (1948-1975), was as superstitious as a summer day is long — so much so that he would panic whenever he discovered that: “Friday the 13th come on a Tuesday this month!” (Or on any other day of the week, for that matter).

As it turns out, though, for Latinos Friday the 13th does come on a Tuesday, because in Spanish-speaking countries, Tuesday — not Friday — the 13th is traditionally considered to be the day of bad luck.

Do you see the problem?

People in Latin America are forced to face the purported hazards of Tuesday — though not Friday — the 13th, while non-Hispanic folks in the U.S. and Canada need to navigate the perils of Friday — though not Tuesday — the 13th.

We bicultural U.S. Hispanics, however, must contend with both.

So, you know, yikes!

Working the “Lo-so” Networks

SmartphonesDid you know that whenever potential customers who are linked in to one or more “lo-so” networks (Loopt, Brightkite, Gowalla, Foursquare, etc.) find themselves within a few blocks of a business’s location, the owner can now instantly send them special promotions, discount coupons, or information about current sales by taking advantage of these and other similar location-based social media networks?
