I love participating in random events. I just signed up for the Krispy Kreme Challenge – run 2 miles, eat a dozen doughnuts, run 2 more miles.

Note: I do not actually attempt to eat a dozen doughnuts. Last year I was able to down 4 doughnuts – this year my goal is 5 (with no “reversals”). I’d also like to note that I haven’t had doughnuts since last year’s race.
Anyone else participating?! February 6th is Race Day!

The Raleigh City Museum’s “Art of Business” exhibit opened Friday with a reception including live music, food and drinks. The exhibit features commercial art including signage, print collateral, packaging and advertising from some historic Raleigh-based businesses.
Howard Merrell & Partner’s own Senior Art Director, John Moore, the grandson of our agency’s founder, Jack Howard, helped complete the exhibit with several original ad pieces and copy from J.T. Howard Advertising Agency (our agency’s founding name). Early clients included Pine State Creamery, the State of North Carolina and Durham Life Insurance.
Several HM&P employees attended the event and enjoyed learning about our agency’s place in Raleigh’s history.

I was watching an old episode of The Secret Millionaire over the weekend. In each episode of this reality series, a multi-millionaire lives in a poverty-stricken community for a week pretending to be working on a documentary. At the end of the week, the true identity of the millionaire is revealed as he/she gives a total of $100,000 of his/her own monies to one or more of the worthy individuals the millionaire has met during that week.
There are hundreds of non-profit organizations all over the Raleigh area. You don’t need to go “undercover” to find them. And though most of us don’t have tens of thousands of dollars to give to worthy causes, we can give our time.
There are hundreds of organizations out there that could benefit from the time and effort of volunteers. For me, I choose to use my professional knowledge and experience to help organizations with their marketing and communications needs. Though I enjoy helping my clients achieve their goals and objectives, I find it truly rewarding to help some local non-profits with promoting their admirable efforts.
If you are not volunteering already, give it a try. I’d highly recommend it.

During my time away from the agency, I volunteer with the Durham County, Special Olympics. Before this past season began, I made a deal with my soccer team. If they could go the entire season without arguing (too much) AND win a gold medal at the North Carolina Special Olympic State Games – they could shave my head.
You see, last year my team was set-up to win the gold, but their in-fighting cost them dearly. My strategy was to use this incentive when they began to argue. A quick reference to my long flowing locks would usually hush them up.
The state games were held November 7th & 8th. They did very well. Let’s just say, I now know the exact shape of my head. Every nook and every cranny!
Bravo to the Durham County Bulldogs. Champions of Division 3. They are a VERY Special Group of athletes. And their barber skills aren’t too shabby either.

As many of you know, I am one of the photographers for the Carolina Rollergirls roller derby team.
Back in November, Raleigh hosted the Wicked Wheels of the East regional tournament and now some of my photographs from that event have found a home on the website of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Philadelphia was the winner of the Eastern Regionals in quite the upset.

Well actually, as the N&O reports, it’s tiny organisms. But, it looks like something out of a b-rate horror flick. Let’s hope it stays out of our pipes.

Dunkin’ Run looks like a great new tool from Dunkin’ Donuts. It lets you send a message to your friends/colleagues informing them you’re about to make a run to Dunkin’, then lets them also place an order. Here’s a look at the website (there’s also an iPhone app):

In Dallas, my colleagues and I used to do TCBY frozen yogurt runs at least once a week, and this would have made it much simpler!
Near HM&P it would be nice to do this for Goodberry’s…or even for Cook-Out milkshakes…or really any of the various food places!
Has anyone tried it? Thoughts on if it will be successful?

As I’m entering my first spring in Raleigh, I’m learning Raleigh has snakes. Snakes are one of the things that I have an unreasonable fear of, and I really am not a fan of encountering them. Below are my two first experiences:
Encounter 1
- When: Sunday, May 3rd – 1:00pm
- Where: Greenway trail off Anderson Dr – mile marker 1/4
- What: 4-foot (ish) black snake with yellow bands
- Action: Turned around and went home – shortened my run
Encounter 2
- When: Sunday, May 10th- 4:30pm
- Where: Greenway trail near Lassiter Mill Rd
- What: Copperhead (couldn’t tell length, it was coiled up)
- Action: Sprinted for a while, ran in the middle of the Greenway path the rest of the way (avoiding the sides of the trail/grass)
Has anyone else seen any snakes this spring? Any idea when we’ll stop seeing them? Tips?
