Competition = Drive = Goodness

With the recent melodrama on the US Women’s Ski team, I started thinking about competition and drive. It sounds as though everyone expects Vonn and Mancuso to be best friends and sacrifice for one another. Yes, they are teammates, but they are also competitors. They are individually striving for Gold because they know when they go home at night, it’s their medal, not the team’s.

This individual drive needs to bleed into the marketing and PR world. An industry, like a ski team, strives for the greater good, but is also looking out for their own interests. If everyone on the ski team practiced the same techniques and got the same times, no one person would advance, just as competitors in an industry. A little healthy competition can be good for the whole.1(4349)

For example, Client A and Client M are working in the shoe industry, both striving to make a non-slip tennis shoe. Client A hires a world-famous engineer, and in an effort to keep up, Client M wants the same engineer, the same materials, the same everything. This isn’t going to get either shoe company a breakthrough, just a lot of the same thing in the market place. A company needs to foster a proactive and not reactive mentality by striving to try new things to break that ‘world record’ in the industry. From what I’ve read, Vonn and Mancuso are very different individuals who go about skiing in two very different ways—one learns by the book, while the other has natural skill; one uses commercial endorsements to further her career, while the other relies on excelling her sport; and so on… Yet each lady has medaled this year.

Instead of worrying about competitor initiatives and copycatting, be bold and be proactive. Strive for Gold every time, because someone has to get Silver and you don’t want to be it.

Roses, chocolates, candy hearts and…AP Style?

10,000 Words, a site that follows journalism and technology, managed to add Romance to the school-yard staples Reading, ‘Riting and ‘Rithmatic with its second annual “Happy VDay: Valentines for Journalists” blog post. The site hilariously incorporates newsroom mainstays such as bylines, crime beats, quotes and word counts into sweet, bite-sized sentiments.

Part of Raleigh’s History

atofbizlogoThe Raleigh City Museum’s “Art of Business” exhibit opened Friday with a reception including live music, food and drinks. The exhibit features commercial art including signage, print collateral, packaging and advertising from some historic Raleigh-based businesses.

Howard Merrell & Partner’s own Senior Art Director, John Moore, the grandson of our agency’s founder, Jack Howard, helped complete the exhibit with several original ad pieces and copy from J.T. Howard Advertising Agency (our agency’s founding name). Early clients included Pine State Creamery, the State of North Carolina and Durham Life Insurance.

Several HM&P employees attended the event and enjoyed learning about our agency’s place in Raleigh’s history.

Well actually, as the N&O reports, it’s  tiny organisms. But, it looks like something out of a b-rate horror flick. Let’s hope it stays out of our pipes.

It was a Civil War to end all Civil Wars.  Foot soldiers from creative and interactive recently got together on the vacant floor of an office building and had at it with Nerf guns.  Nobody broke an ankle (or fell through a window) so all in all it was a good day to die.

Need something to do? Think about roller derby.

Few people know this, but roller derby is making a comeback and Raleigh is lucky enough to have one of the top leagues in the nation.

The Carolina Rollergirls came in #6 nationally in 2008 and are currently #4 in the Eastern Division according the WFTDA (World Flat Track Derby Association) standings.

Some of the older people reading this will say “Oh, I remember that.”, but this is not the hokey, fake-wrestling (don’t get offended wrestling fans) type of roller derby from the 60s and 70s.  This is pure sport.  It is fast, it is powerful and it is extremely fun to watch.

Below are a few photos from local bouts (I am one of the volunteer photographers for the league).

If you are interested in seeing more of my photos check out my Derby Collection on Flickr.

What if pirates wrote their own news headlines?

Apr82009
Jessica Redman

A while ago I read an article on another pirate hijacking that mentioned a pirate spokesperson.  My immediate reaction was – “Pirates have spokespeople that respond to media?!  How do I get this job?”  Next thought was – “Wait, I would probably have to endanger my life to get that job…” Needless to say, I did not do additional research about becoming a pirate spokesperson.

This got me thinking…what would pirates write if they could write their own headline?
•    Pirates hijack ship, demand four million dollars in ransom
•    Pirates bring ship to shore, ask for four million dollars to compensate for their efforts
•    Pirates rescue ship, need compensation for rescue expenses

•    Seamen rescue stranded ship, request four million dollars to cover their rescue expenses

Evolving…

The world of communications is changing and along with it so do we. When I first got into PR, I remember sending media pitches via fax. Crazy, right? I’ve always hated faxes so I was thrilled when more and more media began welcoming e-mails. Now it’s the norm.

I live far from family so I welcomed the Facebook with open arms, but initially, I dug my heels in at the thought of an iPhone or Twitter. However, I relatively quickly succumbed to both. I’ve had my iPhone for about a month, and it does make “being connected” much easier – it’s great for time management – and I quite enjoy it. I’m SOLD!

As far as Twitter goes, more and more, I’ve been hearing news programs and other media promote their presence on the social network, so this weekend I ventured onto the site and set up my own log in. As a communicator, it’s important that I maintain my finger on the pulse of emerging industry trends – it’s my job. So, I’m now dabbling on Twitter.

I’ve also recently started a personal blog to help chronicle everyday special moments with my family – in particular my 2-year-old toddler. I could have kept a traditional journal, but opted for the more technological route because of ease, and all the chatter about blogging drove me to experience it for myself.

I’m excited to see what else is to come in the industry. I look forward to exploring and understanding evolving media both for my clients and for myself.
