With more than 200 million users Facebook is packed full of conversations.  With so much chatter it is critical for brands to see what consumers are saying about them and issues surrounding their products. This can be challenging, but a tool called Lexicon helps to make this process a little easier.  Lexicon allows you to look at the level of conversations about a topic or multiple topics. As you can see in the image above it is easy to see the amount of conversation between “natural” and “organic” and can see the dates for the level of each conversation.

For example your company launches a new campaign with a goal of generating online word-of-mouth. Lexicon would be a good component of the measuring process as a way to show an increase in conversation around a product or issue.

Facebook can be very noisy and Lexicon help brands sort the conversation in a better way.

When the term “social media marketing” is mentioned many minds go directly to Facebook. With more than 200 million members Facebook is the iconic social networking brand and thus the focus of many advertising and marketing efforts. Recently they announced changes to their user dashboard, which displays stats for owners of Facebook brand/fan pages.

Some of these new features include:

  • Graphs showing different types of fan interactions with the Page over time.
  • Count of active fans this week, with full age/sex/location breakdown.
  • A new count of total interactions this week, broken down by type.
  • Post quality rating, from 1 to 5 stars.
  • Graphs for Interactions, Interactions per Post, Post Quality, Stream CTR, Posts, Page views, Media Consumption, Review

All of these improvements provide valuable information for brand marketers, however the feature with the most potential value is post quality ratings. Facebook is about effective content marketing and community building for brands. To make improvements to content a company must know if the content is strong or weak. This type of reporting helps to show trends for the type of information your community/customers are most interested in which can help determine the future direction of both online and offline marketing efforts.

Evolving…

The world of communications is changing and along with it so do we. When I first got into PR, I remember sending media pitches via fax. Crazy, right? I’ve always hated faxes so I was thrilled when more and more media began welcoming e-mails. Now it’s the norm.

I live far from family so I welcomed the Facebook with open arms, but initially, I dug my heels in at the thought of an iPhone or Twitter. However, I relatively quickly succumbed to both. I’ve had my iPhone for about a month, and it does make “being connected” much easier – it’s great for time management – and I quite enjoy it. I’m SOLD!

As far as Twitter goes, more and more, I’ve been hearing news programs and other media promote their presence on the social network, so this weekend I ventured onto the site and set up my own log in. As a communicator, it’s important that I maintain my finger on the pulse of emerging industry trends – it’s my job. So, I’m now dabbling on Twitter.

I’ve also recently started a personal blog to help chronicle everyday special moments with my family – in particular my 2-year-old toddler. I could have kept a traditional journal, but opted for the more technological route because of ease, and all the chatter about blogging drove me to experience it for myself.

I’m excited to see what else is to come in the industry. I look forward to exploring and understanding evolving media both for my clients and for myself.

Is Facebook The One To Rule Them All?

Last week I was in Austin, TX for SXSW Interactive, one of the year’s top interactive conferences. This post is one of several I will be writing to talk about the major developments revealed at SXSW.

One of the first big announcements of the show was from Facebook. Dave Morin from Facebook delivered the news that changes to the Facebook API would now allow iPhone developers to connect their applications directly to Facebook. This simple announcement has huge implications across the web. Facebook Connect is the platform’s killer feature.

With access to Facebook connect on the iPhone a user can now login with a Facebook ID, share info from the app on the news feed and many other social features. However, this move makes Facebook’s future goals clear. They want to become the social ID for the Internet. They want every application on every platform to use Facebook Connect to make that application “social”.

Is this possible? Only time will tell if Facebook can become the one ID to rule them all.

For those of you who could be at SXSW you can listen to audio of Dave Morin’s presentation.
