Media tours, blog posts, new product introductions, tradeshow support, speaking engagements, book promotions, event marketing, bylined articles, Facebook Pages, press kit materials,…Jessica has done it all. She is a strong writer, a media hound, and a meticulous project manager. That is why she has earned herself a promotion to Senior Account Executive.
Straddling two different departments, Jess has her hand in both public relations and social media marketing — which her clients and fellow teammates benefit from every day. We love that we can count on Jess to get the job done, but also to provide some humor along the way.
Congratulations Jess!!

A 2010 graduate of N.C. State, Maria Martinat is proud that her first job out of college is as an Account Coordinator in the PR department at Howard, Merrell & Partners. We are excited about it too.
We found out how great Maria is while she interned with us last summer. She is intelligent, resourceful and diligent — and is a real team player. Maria will use what she learned in college as well as her other internships to help her teams provide the highest quality service to our clients. Before graduating, Maria not only interned at Howard, Merrell & Partners, but also with the Governor’s Office and NBC 17 WNCN in Raleigh. She has been busy!

With the recent melodrama on the US Women’s Ski team, I started thinking about competition and drive. It sounds as though everyone expects Vonn and Mancuso to be best friends and sacrifice for one another. Yes, they are teammates, but they are also competitors. They are individually striving for Gold because they know when they go home at night, it’s their medal, not the team’s.
This individual drive needs to bleed into the marketing and PR world. An industry, like a ski team, strives for the greater good, but is also looking out for their own interests. If everyone on the ski team practiced the same techniques and got the same times, no one person would advance, just as competitors in an industry. A little healthy competition can be good for the whole.
For example, Client A and Client M are working in the shoe industry, both striving to make a non-slip tennis shoe. Client A hires a world-famous engineer, and in an effort to keep up, Client M wants the same engineer, the same materials, the same everything. This isn’t going to get either shoe company a breakthrough, just a lot of the same thing in the market place. A company needs to foster a proactive and not reactive mentality by striving to try new things to break that ‘world record’ in the industry. From what I’ve read, Vonn and Mancuso are very different individuals who go about skiing in two very different ways—one learns by the book, while the other has natural skill; one uses commercial endorsements to further her career, while the other relies on excelling her sport; and so on… Yet each lady has medaled this year.
Instead of worrying about competitor initiatives and copycatting, be bold and be proactive. Strive for Gold every time, because someone has to get Silver and you don’t want to be it.

Back in the early nineties when I was in college, the economy was pretty rough. Jobs were hard to find and college graduates all over the country were searching for employment. Luckily, I attended a university that required each student to complete two three-month internships in his/her field of study before graduating. Many of us completed more than that because we were competitive and we could see that no one was just going to hand us a job, especially in that economy. I must say, we were lucky to be more marketable and prepared than others out there.
Being prepared for the working world is important — not that I am encouraging anyone to grow up too fast or not enjoy college.
Over the years, I have met many undergraduates unwilling to take on an unpaid internship or one that would require them to do any grunt work. I also regularly received resumes from graduating seniors who had never once worked in their field of study but expected to get hired because they are “really good with people”. Oh, and they wanted to be paid an executive salary. Their sense of entitlement absolutely amazed me.
Well this economy seems to have changed that a bit. Interns are taking their roles at the agency very seriously and looking to really learn. They are hungry for knowledge and hands-on experience. Universities are calling us more frequently, requesting one of our staff members to speak to their students or review their resumes. We have also had more inquiries for informational interviews.
Though I certainly can do without the tough economy, I am glad that it has open some eyes.

This week the folks over at Google gave us a cool new way to look at news. Google released its News Timeline services as a new lab product, which means that it is in beta and being tested. The timeline is a simple and straight forward service that lets you search for a term and then see news related to it as a timeline instead of standard search results listings.
This is a great tool for people in the public relations industry because it gives them a way to easily show news coverage that occurred surrounding a client event or announcement. If you had a product announcement on a Tuesday, you can quickly show the news stories related to it that were published in the following days and even weeks. This would be a great tool for people who were big on visuals.
