Crazy Week, Crazy Friday…..Crazy Video

It has been a crazy week here at HM&P with clients stopping by and reporters on deadlines. I thought I would end the week with a laugh by posting a video I found on YouTube.  The clip came from Animal Planet’s “It’s Me or the Dog” show. Enjoy!

Your Winning Cartoon Caption

Every Monday, the New Yorker Magazine holds a Cartoon Caption Writing Contest. The Qualified Winner of each Cartoon Caption Contest will receive a print of the cartoon, with the caption, signed by the artist who drew the cartoon (the “Prize”).

The deadline for this week’s contest is Sunday March 29th. Here’s the cartoon and my lame entry:

“Number 1. Thou shalt not eat MSG.”

C’mon you can do better than a hack copywriter.

Here’s the link to the actual  contest:

Chinese Buffet reviews local BBQ restaurant

We decided last Friday we needed some BBQ in our our bellies. We strapped on our feedbags and headed to downtown Raleigh to chow down on some local ‘cue. Clyde Cooper’s has been around a while for a good reason. It’s awesome despite the fact that you leave with a smell of fried chicken woven in your clothes. Overall we gave it 4 eggs from a 1 to 5 rating with 1 egg being the worst and 5 eggs being the best. Kevin Corfield, or as we call him “Lunch Lady” gave it a perfect 5. “I reckon it’s delicious,” said the lunch lover.

What's the most popular email client?

Most used email clients

No one can say for certain how much one email client is used over another, but Campaign Monitor has taken a stab at it. It’s interesting to me to note that a mobile device (the iPhone) has 3.6% of the email client market. It’ll be intereting to see these numbers in a year or even 6 months. It’s important to note that due to how this information was collected, not every email client can be included in the study.

Madoff v. Lobsters

Woody, my hero, is back with a timely and unexpected piece on the scandal. A must read for seafood lovers, Ponzi scheme victims and people who appreciate smart humor writing.

Social Networks Will Be Like Air

The future of social networks is a highly debated topic. At SXSW Interactive 2009 Charlene Li, co-author of Groundswell provided her own insights about the future of social networks: social networks will be like air.

In her presentation Li said that the original purpose for the Internet was a social one, not a technical one. She contends that all online experiences will be social and that interaction won’t only happen on “social networks”. She referenced Current TV’s election coverage as a great example of TV becoming social.

She contends that for social networks to be like air you need three things: identity, contacts and activities. Regardless if you agree or disagree, Charlene made some excellent points. For the full recap and experience of her presentation I have embed her slides and included a link to the audio of her presentation.

Looking For Free Mac Apps To Make Yourself More Productive?

I’m often looking for apps to help myself be a little more organized or help myself get a task done better or more quickly.

The following link will take you to a great listing of apps that you may or not already know about.

Name Changer and Anxiety are two of my favorite lesser known apps.

Name Changer allows you to instantly rename a group of files.  Very handy if you shoot hundreds of photographs at an event and need to rename and number them to reflect the event.

Anxiety is just an extremely handy to do list that ties in with iCal.

Thanks to Designer Dash Daily Dot Com for putting together such a great list!

Find the perfect desktop image

Google imagesize trick

Here’s a quick tip for finding a desktop image that’s the right size for your screen. Sure you could go to a site like InterfaceLIFT and browse around, but maybe you want the perfect picture of your favorite place in the world: Las Vegas. Head on over to google’s image search and try searching for this:

imagesize:1680x1050 las vegas

The trick is in the first half of the query (the ‘imagesize:’ part) tells google to only return images of that exact size. So now when you need that perfect image of a trebuchet for your computer, you know how to get it without too much hassle.

Is Facebook The One To Rule Them All?

Last week I was in Austin, TX for SXSW Interactive, one of the year’s top interactive conferences. This post is one of several I will be writing to talk about the major developments revealed at SXSW.

One of the first big announcements of the show was from Facebook. Dave Morin from Facebook delivered the news that changes to the Facebook API would now allow iPhone developers to connect their applications directly to Facebook. This simple announcement has huge implications across the web. Facebook Connect is the platform’s killer feature.

With access to Facebook connect on the iPhone a user can now login with a Facebook ID, share info from the app on the news feed and many other social features. However, this move makes Facebook’s future goals clear. They want to become the social ID for the Internet. They want every application on every platform to use Facebook Connect to make that application “social”.

Is this possible? Only time will tell if Facebook can become the one ID to rule them all.

For those of you who could be at SXSW you can listen to audio of Dave Morin’s presentation.
