Tara's Top Tweets of the Week – WordPress

Sorry for the delay in finally getting this post up; it’s definitely been longer than a week, more like a month, since my last post. This collection of links are all about WordPress, the most popular open source blog platform, which can also be used as a content management system for websites and not just blogs. This is in no way a comprehensive list of resources for WordPress since there are so very many good articles on the subject, but it is a collection of some of the better ones I have found within the last month. When not doing interactive… Pt. 4

Footage from 2010 All Levels Stepping Contest in Clemmons, NC on April 11 dancing with my instructor. We did not win, but it’s very good to see my progression from the contest a year ago when I’d first started (see When not doing Interactive).

SAS Shows Off its New Toy

sas

I was fortunate enough to attend the SAS Social Media Analytics Software Launch event (#sassma) last night with a group of about 50 Triangle area social media experts and enthusiasts.  The turn out was a great mix and after some mingling, good food and cold drinks the event was underway.

David Thomas, social media manager at SAS, noted lessons learned from the software launch. It was interesting to see the difference just one year makes in the amount of social media engagement surrounding an event.

In 2009 the SAS Global Forum hashtag (#sgf09) received 500 tweets from 25 unique users (including SAS employees).  In 2010 the number skyrocketed to 3,353 tweets using the hashtag (#sgf10) with 836 unique users (not including SAS employees). More »

Finding a Job in the Online Era

3119891607_5c70175eac

As my graduation from UNC-Chapel Hill looms in my not-so-distant future [insert panic attack here], I thought I would share a little bit about how the job search game has changed with the boom of social media and online social networking.  In the past, it has always been about tapping into personal networks and asking friends who they know.  With the Internet buzzing with social media, there are similar ways to use social media to network, and eventually find a job.

LinkedIn: Basically, LinkedIn is a site that allows you to connect to people you know from your professional network, and allows you to search and connect with other professionals. You can search the profiles of people you would like to reach out to and see if you have any common connections with them.  LinkedIn also allows employers to post jobs to their site, which are usually high quality, professional jobs.

Twitter: The best part of Twitter is that it allows you to connect with people you don’t know, based on common interests.  My first tip is to stay engaged in conversations on Twitter.  Potential employers will notice your insights and reach out to you if you have innovative ideas.  Also, Twitter is great because you can reach out to people you want to network with.  For example, a direct message stating, “Hi, I’m looking to break into social media. Is there anyone you can refer me to?”  Odds are they’ll appreciate you reaching out in a non-traditional way and make efforts to get you connected to the right people.

Resume: Make your resume more interactive, especially if you’re looking to break into social media, or any communications network really.  In my resume, I created an interactive PDF version with active links to my Twitter, LinkedIn and personal blog.  I also made links to other online publications in which I’ve been published so it’s easy for potential employers to see my work instantly.  If you need help doing this, check out this article on inserting hyperlinks.

Although it may sound like common sense, the one thing I’ve learned throughout my job search is people want to help you – but no one is going to help you unless you step up and make the first move.  Employers want intelligent go-getters who aren’t afraid to make the first move, so go out there and get found – whether via Tweet, digital networking, online profile or even a good old fashioned resume.

Anyone else have any social media related tips for those on the job hunt?

Scenes from the SPCA K9-3K

This past weekend, my husband, faithful mutt and I participated in the K9-3K, a fundraiser for the Wake County SPCA. Something like 1,500 dogs and 3,200 people were on hand in Moore Square to raise money and awareness for homeless pets. In a word, insanity, but for a good cause — the event raised over $214,000!

Your Old Long-Sleeve Shirt Could Help Protect NC Tobacco Workers against Green Tobacco Sickness

Long Sleeve ShirtsDuring the month of April, BB&T branches in Cary, NC, and Panoltia, Inc. are collecting long-sleeve shirts to help protect North Carolina tobacco workers against Green Tobacco Sickness.

Green Tobacco Sickness is the result of acute nicotine poisoning. Workers’ clothes become saturated with tobacco juices, which are then absorbed through the skin. Those workers who gather the tobacco leaves under their arms as they harvest them face the most acute risk of illness.

Each of the Cary BB&T branches has a box for the public to drop off shirts. If you have a large volume to donate, you can contact Panoltia at 919-467-3590 to make arrangements for pick up.

Note to HM&P staff: If you have a long-sleeve shirt or shirts (men’s or women’s) that you would be willing to donate to this important cause, just bring them by my office any time this month and I will make arrangements to get them to Panoltia, Inc.

Thanks for your generosity.
