More Growth in Social Media
Over the past several years, the use of social media has grown exponentially and new statistics reveal that growth continues. According to a new research study, “Internet and Social Media Insights”, conducted by The Nielson Company, 75 percent of households engage in social networking. During the month of May, these users spent 6 hours and 13 minutes on social media sites throughout the month, almost double the average amount of time recorded last year (3 hours and 31 minutes).
The report also revealed users spend 22 percent of their online time on social media sites. Facebook remains the most commonly used site with 125.5 million total unique visitors per month and has become the world’s third most-visited online brand.
Several other interesting facts from this study include:
• Twitter has 19.1 million visitors, a number that has grown by 1,520 percent in the past two years
• 20 percent of U.S adults online publish or own a blog
• The average U.S. worker spends 5.5 hours per month on social media sites from the workplace
• During the month of April, 47% of the world’s internet population spent time on YouTube
According to a different report called “Social Network Demographics and Usage” by eMarketer’s the use of social media will continue to increase. The report predicts that by 2014, 67 percent of Internet users will engage in social media on a regular basis.
It will be interesting to see if these numbers will increase at such a dramatic rate next year and how many new social media sites will be created. Overall, I think one thing we can be sure of is that more businesses will be engaging with consumers though social media and it will continue to be an important marketing tool.
