Social Media Interns: What makes them top notch?

In the social media department, we seek out a new intern for each semester, but often upon posting the opening, we are inundated with questions about the position:

“What do you look for in a social media intern?”

“Do I have to have professional experience with social media?”

“I’m on Twitter, is that good enough?”

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) there is no cookie cutter level of experience (professional or personal) that is required for the internship.

Mashable, however, recently posted an article that is a great overview for the kind of skills and qualities we generally look for in an intern. A few pieces of advice that stood out:

“…obviously I look for their knowledge of social media, especially in their personal networks. I look for that individual who ‘gets it’ or is already branding themselves and they may not even know it.”

“Enthusiasm for the space is number one. The rest can come. Enthusiasm can quickly turn into social media addiction, which we do not frown upon here…This is what provides us with the stamina to keep up with an industry that changes minute-to-minute.”

Take a gander and see how you measure up.
