3 Easy Solutions to AutoCorrect Unstructured Writing
What’s the first thing you do when you begin writing? Take a second and analyze your writing process. It may seem efficient, but what is it lacking?
With the age of the mighty word processing software to underline every grammar faux pas, it’s easy to begin typing and hope thoughts translate accurately to the written word. No matter what you’re writing (press release, blog posts, ad copy, Facebook posts), the art of strategy in writing oftentimes gets lost. So, how do we autocorrect this situation?
Prepare before you type
I know everyone is in a rush, but I promise this takes five minutes max. Take out a good ol’ pen and paper and create a simple outline. Short and sweet, this outline should include the purpose, main message, as well as a few supporting examples/outlying thoughts.
Write with precision.
If there’s one thing writing social media messaging has taught me – it’s precision. Don’t lose your audience by rambling one-off thoughts that don’t tie into your main message. Details are great and picturesque, but keep the content centered and clear. Be strategic – What’s important to include…and what’s not? Who’s your audience? Why are you even writing?! If you feel yourself going off base, look back at your outline to help keep you focused.
Step far, far away.
After you’ve finished writing, close the document and, literally or figuratively, step away. Focus on something else for a bit. Take some time to let the thoughts mellow on the page so when you return to edit, you’ll bring a sense of clarity to your writing.
Now, pick up that paper and pen, jot down your thoughts, and keep things simple and concise. Happy writing!
