In the Office

Happy Twolidays!

The social media team here at HM&P couldn’t let the holidays pass by without adding on tw- to a random word. (Confused? Check out this article on Twitter speak.) During our annual office door decorating contest, we whipped up a Twitter stream featuring a cast of Christmas characters, from Santa and Buddy the Elf to more familiar faces seen around the office.

Blurring the lines between "said" and "tweeted"

In 2010, Twitter went from a niche site favored by technology industry insiders to one of the most important marketing, advertising and PR tools of the last decade. The very public, real-time nature of Twitter has changed the ways many media professionals – including journalists – on all sides of the news cycle gather information for public consumption.

Editorial calendar mangement via WordPress

Developing content for blogs – valuable, useful content designed specifically for your business’ target audiences – puts an emphasis on content organization and time management. Cue the well-planned editorial calendar, a publishing world term that groups upcoming ideas for topics over a period of weeks and/or months. In the insta-world of blog publishing, editorial calendar planning can even be as specific as daily and, in some cases, hourly. More »

Only Burger showcases great food – and social media marketing

What do you get when you combine delicious burgers with Twitter?

Here in the Triangle, the answer to that equation would be Only Burger, a local food truck that just narrowly missed winning a recent Food Network contest. (“The most delicious lunch hour ever” would also be a viable answer.)

What these trucks lack in terms of brick and mortar, they make up in taste and social media savvy. Jess Redman, Sarah Findle and I – three fourths of the HM&P social media team – always have an eye on Twitter for our clients, which is how we caught that @OnlyBurger would be at a Raleigh office park two weeks ago. In addition to tweeting out its daily stops, foodies can also check in at the different stops on location-based services such as Foursquare.

UNC-TV also dropped by during our lunch visit as part of a story the station was developing around the food truck trend. We took a breather from downing our food to talk about what influence social media has had on the food truck trend:

Old-School vs. New-School: Twitter Newspaper

It’s hard to scroll through my Google Reader on any given day without seeing some sort of debate on the merits of new media outlets such as Twitter and blogs verses traditional print newspapers and magazines.

While I subscribe to the Raleigh News & Observer’s physical daily, I also use Twitter as a real-time news source. (So do a lot of other people: According to this report, half of Americans say they rely on the people around them to alert them to news, and 44 percent of online news users rely on emails, automatic updates or posts from social networking sites to get their news at least a few times a week.) Personalized infographics

I love a good infographic – from The State of the Internet and Fanboys: A Field Guide to Facebook’s Maze of Privacy Settings and Sci-Fi Movie Quotes in graphic form – I like getting statistical information in an easy-to-understand, well-designed (and sometimes humorous) snapshot.

You’ll notice all of the infographics above link to Cool Infographics, one of my favorite blogs to mine for new images. It alerted me to Ionz, a digital branding company that has an interactive, DIY infographic creator set up on its site. More »

Google Search Stories – Raleigh's Mad Men

Remember the popular “Parisian Love” Super Bowl commercial that had Googlephiles and sports fanatics alike oohing and aahing over a love story made possible via Google search?

YouTube and Google have teamed up to let anyone create their own online timeline via its Search Story tool. Enter up to six search queries, choose where you want to search (blogs, images, maps and more), pick a soundtrack and upload to YouTube. More »

Ning news and What's In myBag

Ning, a platform that allows its more than 46 million users to create their own social network communities, has been a hot topic on blogs and Twitter over the last few weeks. On April 15, much to the chagrin of its nonprofit and education members, the formerly free service announced it would change over to a subscription-based service ranging from $2.95 to $49.95 in monthly fees. Social media and…agriculture?

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about social media – Is it Mashable? Twitter? The latest news (and N.C. sensation) about Apple and its iPhone?

For a growing part of the online community, social media also goes hand in hand with cows and corn. The agriculture industry has embraced online tools such as Twitter chats, Facebook pages and live-blogging to promote the people that take food from the farm to our forks. More »
