We're Spreading Wellness, Not Germs

Get enMotion® - Join the Movement - Spread WellnessHere at HM&P our work with Georgia-Pacific Professional has led to the recent launch of a campaign entitled Spread Wellness. The campaign aims to create a movement of people who regularly wash their hands, dry them with a paper towel and ask the person next to them to do that same. With flu season upon us, we’re spreading the word about the importance of proper hand washing and drying to reduce the spread of germs.

As part of the campaign, you can sign up to be a Wellness Ambassador and receive a welcome kit and free wristband to help spread the word.  You can also download and print hand-washing signs for your office, school, or facility. Plus, if you want to request a touchless paper towel dispenser for a business or other public place, you can request one at the site.

A Hippie’s Advice on Getting High…On the Corporate Ladder?

A hippie’s advice on getting high…on the corporate ladder? Not the first type of person you would think of asking about career advancement, is it? Well in the case of Skip Yowell, co-founder of JanSport, it is. He emerged from the 60’s with a successful business that has kept him and his company high on both life and corporate culture.

In his book, The Hippie Guide to Climbing the Corporate Ladder & Other Mountains: How JanSport makes it happen, Skip takes you from the earliest days of JanSport (with headquarters above an auto-shop and a convenient bar across the street), to the thriving internationally recognized brand it has become today.  He recounts adventures both in business and in the backwoods.

Cambiando Vidas: Actions Speak Louder than Words

100_0697Last week I had the opportunity to travel to the Dominican Republic and volunteer with Cambiando Vidas (Changing Lives), a U.S. based non-profit organization “dedicated to the idea that every person should have access to the basics of life – food, clothing, shelter, education, and the chance to exercise his or her skills and ambitions.” The organization focuses on building houses, educating youth and encouraging sustainable economic development in rural towns throughout the region.

For a week I worked with a group of 16 volunteers (including my dad, sister and good friend from college) as well as members of the local community to build a new house for a deserving family.  Though I enjoyed time away from technology and social media for a week, I was able to learn important lessons in communicating the old fashioned way.

Playing to Social Media Success

Yesterday, despite being tempted by the giant Chess and Connect Four games, I was able to make my way to the Triangle Interactive Marketing Association (TIMA) Lunch and Learn, “The Dollars and Sense of Social Media”, at the Marbles Kids Museum in downtown Raleigh.

I soon realized that those classic games were a great segue to the panel discussion that was to ensue. The topic addressed the way different players in the business world seek and document social media success.  Each player in a game may have a different strategy or skill set to use, yet collectively everyone involved has an end goal – to win. Similarly, players in business approach strategy in their own way, but strive for achieving a common goal – success for the company, client or consumer.

Jeff Cohen, our social media marketing manager, moderated a diverse panel of professionals representing the agency, brand and platform service provider sides of business (Morgan Siem of Media Two Interactive, Phil Buckley of Sinclair Institute, and Adam Covati of Argyle Social, respectively).

Checking in with O2 Fitness

o2fitO2 Fitness is one of our clients here in the PR department at HM&P and we have had a lot of fun helping them spread the word about their seven (and growing!) locations around the Triangle.

O2 Fitness already runs their own Twitter account, Facebook fan page and blog. A new avenue of social media marketing we have explored with them are location-based applications.   One of the new growing trends in social media – location-based applications – allow you to share your location with others by ‘checking in’.
