Mobile by the Numbers
Check out this infographic I found on Mashable showcasing new statistics about mobile use and implications for mobile marketing.
A few notable stats:
- By 2014 mobile internet usage should exceed desktop internet usage.
- One half of all local searches are performed on mobile devices.
- Women age 35 to 54 are the most active group in mobile socialization.
- 91 percent of mobile internet access is to socialize, compared to 79 percent on desktops.
Keeping Up the Pace
One of the other interns in the office recently wrote about the Smart conference at UNC- Chapel Hill. She gave some great insight on what the conference discussed. It was a great time and I really hope they have more conferences at UNC about social media.
I wanted to share my thoughts on what Jeff Cohen talked about in his opening keynote. He focused on what the social media world was like in 2007, when most of us had just started college. The social landscape has changed so much in a short amount of time. We are graduating from college in a different online world than the one we started in.
Instead of talking about the change in the tools themselves, I want to discuss the challenge of keeping up with the constant changes. More »
Social Media Interns: What makes them top notch?
In the social media department, we seek out a new intern for each semester, but often upon posting the opening, we are inundated with questions about the position:
“What do you look for in a social media intern?”
“Do I have to have professional experience with social media?”
“I’m on Twitter, is that good enough?”
Doing Social Good with Social Media
Social media has been, and will continue to be, an extremely useful medium for connecting with friends, networking and sharing. However, did you know that social media has been proven to do social good?
Sarah Kessler, freelance writer at Mashable, wrote a post on 5 trends that are shaping social good via social media: More »
Saving seconds with Google Instant
When it comes to Google, it seems good things really do come in threes.
A few weeks ago, Google gave Gmail users the ability to make calls from their e-mail, last week, Google launched the Gmail Priority Inbox, and this week Google enhances its search abilities with Google Instant. More »
I don't have e-mail, I have Gmail
Reflecting back on the past couple of days, I realized that 70 percent of my conversations this week at my internship, school and beyond have revolved around Google. Why?
Two days ago, Google launched Priority Inbox. This new feature is an algorithm that studies your e-mail habits to prioritize and categorize the way you view your messages. For example, Gmail Priority will track who you e-mail the most (and vice-versa) and mark their messages as first priority. It also divides your messages into categories, such as: starred, important and unread. More »
Twitter, Skype and Virtual Closets: Students Get Ready for School
As the end of August approaches, I see some of my fellow classmates and even a few of my professors fall victim to back to school fever. Stores offer discounts on pencils, notebooks and the latest fashions, and teachers research new ways to entertain and relate to their students. While blackboards, overheads and chalk are common words associated with back to school season, social media tools are joining in on the fun. More »
Facebook: The Online Shopping Network?
Anyone who has been a Facebook user since the beginning knows Facebook from its simplest form- as a way to connect with new college friends and old high school buddies. Since then, Facebook has made significant changes and added various new features and uses, paving their way to social media success.
With the rise of Facebook Connect, the ability to share information with third party websites and applications, the social media site continues to grow. According to a recent post in Mashable, the next step in development for Facebook is integrating virtual currency with Facebook Connect. More »
Facebook Questions
Looking for a better way to get answers? Facebook has a solution. This week Facebook has announced the launch of one of their newest applications, Facebook Questions. The purpose of this application is to give users access to the knowledge of the now 500 million people on Facebook. Facebook Questions is similar to Yahoo! Answers and Maholo.
Users have the option of posing questions to just their friends (similar to if they were posting on their wall), or to the entire Facebook community. From here, users can turn their question into a poll to get more feedback.
MySpace: Back With a Vengeance
Remember MySpace? I definitely do. MySpace was the first social network I joined back in middle school, and it was a great way to connect with friends and meet new ones. Unfortunately, when Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook, MySpace swiftly took a back seat. More »
